This is me.

Hi everyone!

My name is Amishi and I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan studying Public Health Sciences. If someone were to ask me what my greatest passions in life were, they would get a very quick and simple answer: health, wellness, and writing/journaling. I always knew these interests has a connection, but until recently it was unclear how writing led to wellness or how good health led to better writing.

I got my first journal when I was seven years old. I remember taking it to my 2nd grade class and showing it off to all my friends and then yelling at them when they asked to see what was inside. “You can’t look at my diary, it’s only for ME!” I used to take it to my after school daycare and during homework time, I would open up all my homework, lay it out in front of me to make it seem like I was working, and secretly scribble away in my diary until homework time was over. My 2nd grade teacher saw me pouring my heart into the journal one day and commented on how perfect my cursive was. I remember being so proud of this diary and it's really interesting to see how its translated into my modern journalism. I went through phases of what I would use my journals for. I started off in second grade with details of my day and then slowly transitioned into my annoyances with people’s comments at school and how I felt about through my daily routine. In fourth grade I started writing poetry about my friends, about experiencing sadness, and about music. I look back at these journals and see exactly where the root to my modern interests was planted. I then started composing song lyrics in around sixth grade and learning piano to sing these lyrics to. The exact structure of my journals varied year to year, but the two constant have always been the cathartic feeling I experienced once putting my whirlwind of thoughts down on paper and my “perfect” cursive.”

On my projects page, you can see the said cursive I was talking about, but there is something behind that cursive that is not able to be physically seen, and that is the development of my personality and the consistent therapeutic waves writing has provided for me. So, I guess when it comes to tying my interests together,  it is clearly seen through the progression of my journal entries.

I recently started a student organization, Project WriteOn, to promote writing as a medium of wellness. My goal with this organization is to create an inclusive writing community at the University of Michigan through the power of journaling. I want this medium to be recognized as a tool for self and group healing. Just like I trusted journaling to help me rationalize my world, I want to instill this level of well-being in people around me.
